Turn Difficult Reading Into Memorable Ideas You Can Clearly Explain
A live four-week workshop that helps you analyse, remember and explain what you read using a simple method based on the classical Trivium.
Understanding is not explaining

You can spend time reading a challenging book, follow the author's argument and feel that you've understood the ideas. But when you close the book and try to explain what you've read, it can be difficult to recall the important points, organise your thoughts or put the ideas into your own words.Reading and understanding are important. Being able to remember and clearly explain what you've read is another skill entirely.
A Simple Method
The workshop is built around three stages: Input, Processing and Output. Based on the classical Trivium, this method gives you a practical way to work through challenging nonfiction and turn what you read into ideas you can explain.
1. Input: Read and AnnotateYou'll choose a piece of challenging nonfiction that interests you, read it carefully and use a simple annotation system to identify important ideas, arguments and details.2. Processing: Organise Your UnderstandingYou'll use a 5W1H worksheet to examine what you've read through six questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.This helps you select and organise the information you want to remember and explain.3. Output: Explain in Your Own WordsYou'll make a spoken recording explaining what you've read without looking at the text or your notes. You'll also make an initial recording before applying the full method, allowing you to compare your explanations and assess your progress.
The aim is to develop a repeatable process for understanding important ideas, recalling them and explaining them clearly.
Week 1
You'll be introduced to the method, choose a piece of challenging nonfiction and begin reading it.After the session, you'll make an initial spoken recording explaining what you remember without looking at the text or your notes. This gives you a starting point for measuring your progress.
Week 2
You'll listen to your initial recording and consider what you explained well and where you struggled. You'll then set one or two personal goals to guide your improvement during the rest of the workshop.
Week 3
You'll return to your chosen text, annotate it and use the 5W1H worksheet to organise its important ideas. You'll then make a second spoken recording, explaining what you've read from memory after applying the method.
Week 4
You'll compare your two recordings, review your personal goals and assess how your explanation has developed. You'll also have opportunities for constructive feedback to help you identify what improved and what you can continue working on.
What's Included in the Workshop
Weekly Live Teaching SessionsJoin four 90-minute sessions on Wednesday evenings. Each session introduces the next stage
of the workshop and gives you guidance on putting the method into practice.
Drop-in Sunday Support Sessions (Optional)Join the Sunday sessions to ask questions, discuss difficulties and get additional guidance. The final Sunday session will focus on reviewing the experience and gathering feedback from the founding group.
Practical Guides and WorksheetsYou'll receive a method guide, an annotation guide, a 5W1H worksheet, a self assessment form and a progress checklist to support your work throughout the workshop.
A Small Founding GroupThe workshop is limited to 12 participants so there is room for questions, participation and individual feedback.
Personalised FeedbackYou'll have opportunities to receive constructive feedback on your spoken explanations, including observations about what is working and what you could improve.Feedback can be provided during live sessions or privately, depending on your preference and the arrangements made with the instructor.
Session Recordings and ReplaysTeaching sessions will be recorded, with participants' consent, so you can revisit the material or catch up if you cannot attend live.
Access to the Workshop CommunityYou'll have access to a private Skool learning space containing the workshop resources, session replays and community discussions. You'll retain access to the hosted materials and community for as long as HEYS continues to maintain them. This does not include ongoing individual coaching after the workshop ends.
Who is this for?
This workshop is for anyone who wants to get more out of challenging nonfiction by learning how to analyse, remember and clearly explain what they read. You don't need any previous experience with the classical Trivium or a particular level of reading ability. The workshop is suitable for you if:1. You enjoy reading nonfiction but sometimes struggle to recall or explain what you've read.2. You want a practical, repeatable method for working through challenging ideas.3. You're willing to read independently and practise explaining ideas in your own words.4. You're comfortable making spoken recordings of yourself, even if you choose not to share them with other participants.5. You're willing to reflect on your progress and give honest feedback about your experience.
Who is this NOT for?
This workshop may not be suitable if you're looking for a speed reading course, a way to memorise entire books or a programme focused primarily on public speaking. It also requires some independent work between sessions. If you're unable to make time for reading, annotation and the recording exercises, you may find it difficult to benefit fully. The aim is to develop a method you can continue practising with your own reading, rather than simply attend four lectures.

Requesting a free educational resource does not automatically constitute consent to unrelated promotional emails.
Ultimate Reading List
When you request the Ultimate Reading List, we use your email address to send the requested resource.
Continuity of Control
When you request Continuity of Control, we use your email address to deliver the nine-part educational email series and the associated completion message and downloadable resources.
The requested educational sequence ends after its scheduled messages have been delivered.
Optional marketing
Where our signup forms offer a marketing-consent checkbox, that choice is separate from requesting the free resource, optional and unticked by default.
Our optional promotional emails may include book recommendations, research updates, livestream announcements, workshops, memberships and offers.
We use Kit to record and manage subscription and consent preferences.
Where applicable law permits promotional emails on another basis, such as a qualifying existing-customer exception, we must meet the relevant conditions.
We do not treat silence, inactivity or an unticked checkbox as affirmative marketing consent.
Unsubscribing and withdrawing consent
You can withdraw marketing consent or object to direct marketing at any time using the unsubscribe facility in relevant emails or by contacting [email protected].
We will respect valid opt-outs and objections. We may retain limited suppression information to ensure that people who have opted out are not contacted again for the relevant marketing purpose.
A general unsubscribe action may also affect delivery of other emails through the same email platform, depending on its operation.

You have an absolute right to object to the use of your personal information for direct marketing. We will stop processing your information for that purpose when you object.
5. Our Skool Communities
We operate educational communities using Skool, including:
• HEYS REVIEWS, which offers discussions, educational activities, livestream-related content and paid membership options.
• How to Use a Book, which supports workshops and associated educational activities.
When you join, we may receive or access information about your membership, profile, payments, participation and contributions.
Some content is available to community members generally, while other resources may be restricted according to membership or course access.
Community posts and discussions
Information you post in shared areas may be visible to existing and future members.
Leaving a community does not necessarily remove earlier contributions. Requests relating to personal information in community content will be considered under applicable data protection law and the available platform controls.
Private messages
Private Skool messages are processed through Skool's platform.
Skool has confirmed to us that administrators cannot delete individual direct messages or their attachments, and that Skool Support cannot individually delete them on request. Account deletion may have different consequences under Skool's own arrangements.
We therefore do not use Skool direct messages as the designated method for collecting workshop assignments that must be deleted after a defined period.
Workshop assignments
Where private workshop assignments are required, we will explain the approved submission method and retention arrangements before collecting them.
Skool also processes information under its own privacy arrangements. Members should review Skool's privacy information before using the service.
Requesting one of our free lead magnets does not automatically enrol you in either community.
6. Live Sessions and Recordings
We may record selected educational sessions for legitimate teaching, replay and publication purposes.
How to Use a Book workshops
For the currently planned workshop format, we intend to record the teaching portions of Wednesday sessions, primarily capturing the facilitator and teaching materials.
We aim to avoid capturing participants' cameras, voices, names or messages in these teaching recordings. Recording settings will be tested before use.
If participant information is captured unintentionally, we will consider appropriate measures before distributing the recording.
Group discussions and questions
Where identifiable participant contributions are proposed for recording, we will explain the arrangements and seek appropriate permission.
Participation in group discussions will not be conditional on agreeing to optional recording.
Sunday support sessions
Under the currently planned How to Use a Book workshop arrangements, optional Sunday support sessions will not be recorded.
Access to teaching recordings
Restricted workshop recordings may be provided to authorised participants through Skool or another designated service.
Access arrangements are subject to the applicable workshop terms and the continued availability of the resources.
Other activities
HEYS REVIEWS livestreams, interviews and public educational broadcasts have separate publication arrangements, described in the next section.
7. Public Content and Sharing Recordings
Public livestreams and interviews
HEYS REVIEWS produces public livestreams, interviews and other recorded educational content that may be broadcast live, published, replayed or distributed through platforms such as YouTube and other media services.
Invited guests and contributors will be informed of the intended broadcast and publication arrangements before participating.
Identifiable contributions made during a public broadcast may appear in the resulting recording, including names, usernames, voices, images and comments.
Private workshop contributions
Agreement to participate in a private workshop does not automatically authorise the use of identifiable private contributions in unrelated public promotional materials.
Where further permission is required for a proposed use, we will seek it separately.
Testimonials
We will obtain appropriate permission before publicly using identifiable private testimonials or participant contributions where required.
Withdrawal and removal requests
Where processing relies on consent, that consent may be withdrawn.
We will assess withdrawal, erasure and objection requests under applicable law and take appropriate action in relation to material within our control.
Material already broadcast, downloaded, copied or distributed by others may not be fully retrievable.
Teaching materials or recordings that do not contain identifiable participant contributions may be reused for educational purposes.
8. How Long We Keep Information
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose concerned or where applicable law requires further retention.
Free-resource subscribers
We retain information reasonably needed to administer resource requests, maintain subscription preferences, record consent and opt-out decisions, and demonstrate relevant processing history.
We review subscriber records at least annually and delete or anonymise information that is no longer needed, where appropriate.
An annual review does not mean every subscriber record is automatically retained for a full additional year or deleted after a fixed period.
Marketing information
Marketing subscription information is retained while there is an appropriate lawful basis for its use. Limited records of consent, withdrawal and objections may be retained where necessary to demonstrate compliance or maintain suppression lists.
